Call for Pieces

General Call

The Culture as Care Journal solicits opinion pieces, shorter versions of formal peer-reviewed articles, and expressive pieces that engage our anti-capitalist mission and core points of unity. Read our “About” page for more information. We are particularly interested in pieces that explore these questions:

  1. How can culture function as an essential form of care?
  2. What could culture be in a world liberated from capitalism and class domination?
  3. What desires do you have for a liberated cultural life?
  4. How does capitalist society value and undervalue cultural and artistic activity?
  5. What are some challenges we face when organizing among cultural workers and practitioners? How could we improve our organizing strategies as cultural workers and practitioners?
  6. Within cultural practices, what is the relationship between the dynamics of our political economy, our ecology, and our embodied selves?

Israeli Occupation and Genocide in Palestine

We are interested in pieces that address the ongoing occupation and genocide in Palestine. We would like to hold space for people thinking about this crisis. Some of the questions we have are:

  1. How are cultural forms weaponized to legitimize the occupation and genocide in Palestine?
  2. How is culture and identity used to promote and defend social domination?
  3. How is culture a battleground for civil liberties and labor rights amidst the Palestinian genocide?
  4. What can artists do to critique and protest imperialism?
  5. How could we use culture to reflect on fear, heal trauma, and ultimately build solidarity?

We are open to publishing pieces that address other aspects of this crisis.

Logistics

We are open to pieces in any style and medium. Editing will focus mainly on clarity and basic fact checking. The editors welcome pieces that are critical of our perspective, but if included we will indicate that the author is critical of our position.
